How to apply at TVET colleges in South Africa

Now that you've discovered the benefits of studying at a TVET college and explored the open TVET colleges for 2024, it's time to understand the application process. You can apply in TVET colleges online. Follow the steps below on how to apply at TVET colleges in South Africa.

  • First visit the desired TVET college website or coltech 
  • Write a placement test (This is compulsory in other TVET colleges)
  • Click on the "Apply" tab (After you have written your placement test)
  • Fill in your personal details, next of kin details and your results
  • Choose the courses you want to apply for
  • Upload the certified and scanned documents
  • Submit your application
  • You will get a confirmation that your application has been submitted successfully. In other colleges you will receive a student number after submitting your application.

 

Majority of South African TVET colleges use the coltech platform to allow applicants to do the online application. If a particular TVET college uses the coltech platform, the application process will slightly be different. Follow the steps below on how to apply at TVET colleges in South Africa using the coltech platform.

  • You can either start by choosing the course you want to apply for or by registering an account
  • Fill in your personal details, next of kin details and your results
  • Upload the certified and scanned documents
  • With the coltech platform, you wont receive a student number after submitting your online application.

Please note that all the TVET colleges that use the coltech platform require the same password and username. For example if you have applied at Esayidi college and now you want to apply at Majuba college, you will use the same login details. 

Username is your ID number. Don't forget to write the placement test before or after the online application. Your application will not be considered if you have not written the placement test.

 

Admission Requirements of TVET colleges in South Africa

 NATED COURSES
In order to apply for NATED courses in TVET colleges you need to have passed your; 

To enter N4 – Intro N4 and or Grade 12
To enter N5 – N4 Certificate
To enter N6 – N5 Certificate
To apply for a National N-Diploma – N6 Certificate plus 2 000 hours of practical experience in industry (to be logged in a prescribed logbook).

NCV COURSES 
In order to apply for NCV courses in TVET colleges you need to have passed your;

Grade 9 for entry into Level 2
Passed ITEC Level 2 for entry into Level 3
Passed ITEC Level 3 for entry into Level 4
 

N1-N3 COURSES
In order to apply for N1-3 courses you need to meet the following requirements: 

N1: Minimum of Grade 11 and you must be registered as an apprentice with a company. 
N2: N1 or equivalent
N3: N2 or equivalent

 

SA TVET COLLEGES COURSE DURATION

NATED COURSES 

  • Each National (N) Level Certificate takes 6 months to complete
  • To complete all the National Certificates will take at least 1 year six months to 2 years.
  • Enrolment is in January and July
  • You will require 18 months industry experience to convert the Certificates to a N-Diploma.

After completion of the N4 – N6 Certificates students need to complete 18 months in industry/practical before qualifying for National N-Diploma through the department of Higher Education and Training. 

NCV COURSES

  • You will study 3 years full-time
  • Enrolment in January (Part-time - Available in some tvet colleges)

N1-N3 COURSES

  • Each level is one trimester (12 weeks)
  • Enrolment in January, May or September
  • Part-time options are available

 

TVET colleges Required Documents

To apply successfully in TVET colleges, you need to attach the following documents:

  1. Your certified ID copy
  2. Your certified matric certificate or your grade 9/10/11 final report
  3. Your parent/next of kin certified ID copy
  4. Your proof of residence
  5. Your photo (some colleges)
